There is a saying that actions speak louder than words. I feel that words are just as powerful as actions when you notice a pattern in what is said. I believe that this is especially true when Christians are trying to lead others to Christ. The question is, how do I show that I love God? One of the ways is to show that you have love for God’s creation.
“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.” – James 3:9
I love my husband. Women, if you haven’t figured it out yet, the best way to show a man you love him is to praise, compliment and admire him. I have not met a straight man who doesn’t like it when a woman admires his manliness.
One of the ways to admire a man, is to admire the work he has done. That may be work he has done with his hands (like building a cupboard, tiling the bathroom or washing the car), or it may be work he has done with his brain (like academic achievements).
How do I show that I love God by using this principle? Men understand the language of admiration means love and respect, you could logically say that when we admire God’s creation and give God the glory for the creation, we are showing human beings that we love God.
But what happens when we praise a man, but are negative about something the man has created? Let’s pretend I say to my friend “I love my husband”, but then the next day I complain to her that he never does anything right and I might as well do it myself. Aren’t I sending my friend mixed signals?
Then what happens if I say to my husband “I love you” then he overhears me being negative about something he made to one of my friends. How would that make him feel?
I bring another example to you. What does it show your family if you go to church and praise God on Sunday’s, but go home and say bad things about the other members of your local church body to your family? Then I ask, what does it show your family if you go to church and praise God on Sunday’s, but say bad things about the people running the country you live in? I am not saying we must turn a blind eye to corruption or people’s sins, but wouldn’t it be more loving to pray that the person’s sins will come to light and that the person will be made aware of their sins so that they can repent and become a better person?
How do I show that I love God?
I show that I love God by doing my best to not speaking negatively about any part of his creation! You can show that you love God, by loving every part of his creation. Remember the greatest commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you!”
Having said all this, I would like to praise my husband for the excellent work he did on the fence seen in the picture above, and it was made from the natural wood materials that God himself created!
The context of James 3:9
The human tongue is a powerful thing. The James 3:9 verse above was actually taken from a context where the writer was talking about taming your tongue. In other words, learning to be careful about what you say. The tongue can speak words that can wound other people deeply, or it can speak words that can build them up.
Therefore, the words that come out of your mouth show the true nature of your heart. If you want to know if a person loves God, first see if they profess Jesus Christ as the Messiah, then see if they speak words of love from their mouth. Not everyone is perfect, but honestly ask yourself, do you speak more words of love or more words of negativity in your day-to-day life?
